The Student Chapter of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Nirma University, organized
a session (“What is BIS and Activities of BIS Student Chapter”) and a short Quiz Competition
related to Indian Standards for the Student Chapter members of Electrical Engineering. The event
aimed to help students test and broaden their knowledge about standards and their applications. The
event was scheduled on 25/09/2025 (Thursday) at D-313 from 02:40 p.m. to 04:40 p.m.
The event commenced with an insightful awareness session delivered by Mr. Pramod Kumar,
Scientist-B/Assistant Director, focused on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National
Standard Body. The primary objective was to educate participants about the crucial role of BIS in
ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of products and services. Explanation of BIS as a
statutory body established under the BIS Act, 2016, and its foundational role in standardisation
and certification in India. The process by which BIS develops and publishes Indian Standards (IS)
across various sectors of the economy, promoting consumer safety and industrial growth. Briefing
on other vital functions like the establishment of laboratories for testing, consumer empowerment
activities, and international collaboration with bodies like ISO and IEC. Emphasis on how
consumers can identify genuine certified products and the use of the BIS Care App for checking
product authenticity and filing complaints.
Following the awareness session, a lively Quiz Competition (through the Mentimeter
software tool) was conducted to test and reinforce the participants’ understanding of the
information shared and general knowledge about standards and quality. For the quiz, a team of 3
students was formed. The quiz comprised 22 multiple-choice questions, covering topics such as
BIS and its significance, BIS standards for electrical appliances and equipment. The competition
concluded with the announcement of the winners. Prizes were distributed to the top performers to
encourage their active participation and continued interest in quality awareness.
